ODANAVATTOM: A youth who caught the snake that bit him and reached Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital to seek treatment has died. The relatives lodged a complaint with the police alleging medical negligence. The deceased has been identified as R Nithin (28), a resident of Neethu Bhavan in Odanavattom Kompara.
Nithin, who was sleeping on the bed, was bitten by a snake around 4 am in his hand. Nithin reached Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital with the help of his relatives after catching the snake that fell on the ground when he jumped up. Though the duty doctors informed that the treatment was started by administering antivenom, the relatives were not allowed to stay with the patient during the treatment.
It was told that Nithin needed to rest for one-and-a-half hours after the antivenom injection. However, an hour later, it was informed that his condition was critical. The relatives demanded that he be shifted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College after seeing the doctors pressing his chest and giving him emergency treatment. However, the doctors did not agree.
Three hours later, Nithin succumbed to death. With this, the relatives created a ruckus in the hospital alleging that the doctors did not deliberately provide treatment. Someone said there was no stock of antivenom in the hospital, which added to the strength of the conflict. The relatives called off the agitation on the assurance of the hospital authorities and the police. The police led by Pooyappally SHO took follow-up action. The body was shifted to the mortuary after post-mortem at 3 pm. Nithin's wife Mithula is an employee of a private hospital in Kottarakkara. Their daughter is Nithia (one-and-a-half years old).
