CHENNAI: Ravichandran Ashwin's second consecutive century at Chepauk and Ravindra Jadeja's crucial support guided India to a strong position on Day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh. At one stage, India was reeling at 144 for six, facing the prospect of a major collapse. However, Ashwin and Jadeja's partnership for the seventh wicket turned the game around, lifting India to a respectable 339 for six by the end of the day's play.

Ashwin, showcasing his class with the bat, completed his sixth Test century off just 108 balls, hitting 10 fours and 2 sixes. Remarkably, this marks his second consecutive century at this venue, having scored 106 against England in the 2021 series at Chepauk. He remained unbeaten on 102 at stumps, while Jadeja provided excellent support with 86 not out, ensuring India finished the day in a much-improved position.

Earlier, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that paid off early. The 24-year-old pacer Hasan Mahmud was the star with the ball, delivering fiery spells that tore through India's top order. Skipper Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0) and Virat Kohli (6) were all dismissed cheaply, leaving India in trouble.

Despite the early setbacks, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal held his ground with a well-made 56, but India’s middle-order continued to falter. Rishabh Pant (39) looked in ominous form before mistiming a catch to Liton Das off Hasan Mahmood. KL Rahul's struggles continued as he managed just 16 runs, leaving India precariously placed.

It was then that Ashwin and Jadeja stepped up, forging a vital partnership that shifted the momentum back in India's favor. With both all-rounders at the crease, India will look to build on this solid foundation as they head into Day 2.

India ended Day 1 at 339 for six, with Ashwin on 102* and Jadeja on 86*, hoping to extend their lead and put pressure on Bangladesh.
