Actress TT Usha, who rose to fame among Malayalis in the 1990s as a supporting actress and heroine, recently opened up about being removed from a film after standing up for the truth. In a candid interview with a YouTube channel, Usha revealed the challenges she faced in the industry, including harsh criticism for a particular scene in a movie.
"Those who speak the truth are often sidelined. I faced a lot of criticism for a scene in director N Shankaran Nair's 'Agninilavu'. I was one of the three heroines in the film, and the movie opens with a scene where masked men chase me. Mamukkoya, Jagathy Sreekumar and Jagadish were with me in that scene, but I was the only one who bore the brunt of the backlash. That scene is still circulating on social media, but none of my co-stars faced any issues," Usha recalled.
Reflecting on the stark differences between cinema then and now, Usha shared, "Most actresses of that era were cast in romantic roles, as I was. Yet, I was singled out and criticized. Many people in the industry targeted me, possibly because I wasn't afraid to speak out. Some had an agenda to push me out of films."
Usha further revealed that after working in popular films like Punjabi House, Alibaba and Ararakallanmar, she took a ten-year hiatus from acting. "It was during this break that I started transitioning into serials," the actress added.
