VIZHINJAM: Dr Wills, who did the good Samaritan work for six decades in Vizhinjam, is no more. Since the day Azhakulam Wills Nursing Home came into existence, the word spread about Dr M J Wills in the coastal town of Vizhinjam.
Even today, some people remember how Dr Wills used to arrive in an Ambassador car akin to movie heroes of those times. He would have his medical equipment meticulously packed in a suitcase. Doctor Wills would rush to his patients even in the dead of the night. Time never stood as a hindrance to his work ethic. Unlike the doctors of today, Wills never demanded money and would happily receive any sum of money given by his patients. Without even caring to count, Wills would put that money into his pocket with a hearty smile.
The generous attitude and amiable relationship made Wills the favourite among the public.
Wills, a native of Kanjiramkulam Chani, came to Vizhinjam in 1973 after completing his MBBS. With the help of his friends, he started a hospital named Wills Nursing Home in a rented building in Azhakulam. During those times, there were no private hospitals on the premises.
The magnanimous work and efficiency in treatment helped spread the word of Wills nursing home all across the town. Although he got a job in the government service, Wills remained steadfast in his approach to helping the downtrodden in society. A large number of people from the coastal areas relied on Wills for treatment.
Not just treatment, the doctor also helped patients financially during strenuous times. If a patient needed extra attention, Wills would not hesitate to take his car to bring the patient to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
Even foreigners who contracted fever during their itinerary in Kovalam used to reach Wills for immediate medical attention. Wills also had the great fortune to meet Mother Teresa during his lifetime.
Until 2021, Wills continued his yeoman service but later fought a losing battle to age-old ailments and was bedridden during his sunset years.
