mt-theft-case

KOZHIKODE: In connection with the theft of 26 sovereigns of gold from the residence of renowned writer MT Vasudevan Nair, five people, including household staff, have been taken into custody by the Nadakkavu police. These individuals were detained last night and are currently undergoing detailed interrogation. However, no formal arrests have been made so far.

The police had previously questioned several family members, following which five suspects were taken into custody. The missing jewellery, valued at Rs 15 lakh, was kept in a cupboard at the residence on Nadakkavu Palace Road.

The case was registered after a complaint was filed by MT Vasudevan Nair's wife, Saraswati. According to the complaint, the theft occurred between September 29 and 30, while MT and his wife were away from home. Among the stolen items were three necklaces, a bangle, two pairs of earrings, a pair of diamond earrings, an emerald locket and another locket.

The theft was discovered only when the cupboard was later checked, as the couple initially thought the jewelry had been misplaced. There were no signs of forced entry, leading the police to suspect that the thief may have used a key that was kept near the cupboard.

A special investigation team, led by Nadakkavu CI Prajeesh and under the supervision of Town ACP Ashraf Tengilakandiyil, is probing the case. The dog squad and fingerprint experts have already examined the crime scene. ACP Tengilakandiyil stated that the investigation has been intensified and arrests are expected soon.
