KOZHIKODE: Reports said that there was a lapse from the side of KSEB employees on the electrocution of a student from the iron pillar of a shop verandah. The incident happened in last May. Mohammad Rijas (18), son of Ali Musliyar of Poovatttuparambu Aanakuzhikkara Puthiyottil, died after coming in touch with the iron pillar while keeping the damaged scooter on the verandah of the shop in the rain. The accident happened near Mundupalam AWH road junction in Kozhikode.

Rijas' scooter broke down while he was returning after work from a hotel in Kinassery. He then called his brother Rafi to go home. Meanwhile, the accident happened when he was trying to keep his bike on the verandah of the shop. He accidentally caught the pillar. His brother, who came there tried to save him, but he was also electrocuted. Rijas was working in the hotel while preparing for higher studies after his plus two.

Shop owner P Muhammad alleged that he had complained to KSEB about the shock on the pillar but no action was taken. The electrical inspectorate found that the lack of vigilance of three KSEB employees, including the overseer, was the cause of the accident. Reports said the electric leakage from the service wire caused the shock and the service wire inside the shop had a safety issue. The report also said the lapse from the side of KSEB despite the customer's complaint, did not solve after finding the fault in the service line. The accused officers were transferred after protests arose over the incident.

The boy’s family demanded action against the officials mentioned in the report and sought financial assistance. The family said that if no action is taken, they will go on strike under the leadership of the action committee.
