MUMBAI: Tata Nano, which revolutionized the car dreams of common people, was born from a vision of Ratan Tata. That sight made ordinary people travel without being wet by rain or sun.
The face of a child sandwiched between the father and mother on a scooter was a regular sight on Ratan's journeys. That sight motivated him and sparked a desire to produce such a vehicle. Ratan, then created the country’s first affordable car Nano. A car of Rs one lakh that will not drain the common man's pocket. Ratan Tata shared the sight he saw during the birth of Nano on social media.
Tata launched Nano with features like AC, power steering and alloy wheels. Nano was introduced in 2008. There were seven variants in petrol and CNG options. The mileage was up to 22 km.
The Nano raced with ordinary people in any weather and on any broken roads. Manufacturing costs for the Nano, which was marketed at Rs 1 lakh, were often a challenge. Tata continued Nano production for emotional reasons despite knowing it was losing money. Tata Motors finally discontinued the production of the Nano at the end of 2018. We hear that the Nano will be re-entered in an electric form.
