DEHRADUN: Two inmates escaped from a jail in Dehradun while they were enacting a mythological drama. Two inmates, who were playing Vanaras in search of Sita, escaped from the jail while performing a Ramleela drama in Haridwar's Roshnabad jail. Both were prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment.

They were dressed as Vanaras in search of Sita. They went missing during the event. Pankaj Kumar, a resident of Roorkee, and Ram Kumar, a resident of Gonda in Uttar Pradesh, are the convicts who escaped. One was convicted of murder, and the other was charged with kidnapping. According to the police, the duo used the ladder used by construction workers to escape.

The authorities did not realise that the two had escaped even when the number of inmates was counted on the night after the drama. The authorities came to know about the incident around 6.30 am the next day. Higher officials have ordered an inquiry into the lapses of the jail officials.
