CALIFORNIA: Authorities have thwarted a third assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump after arresting a man carrying firearms and a fake pass to attend one of Trump's rallies. The suspect, identified as Vem Miller (49) from Las Vegas, was detained near the Coachella Valley, California, where Trump was scheduled to speak. Miller was arrested just moments before the rally began, at a checkpoint located half a kilometre from the event. A shotgun, handgun and full ammunition were seized from his vehicle. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco confirmed that the arrest had averted another assassination attempt.
Miller, who holds a master's degree from the University of California and ran for the Nevada State Assembly in 2022, was arrested on-site. He has been identified as an anti-government, far-right activist, with authorities describing him as a sectarian who rejects U.S. government authority.
Miller was released on $5,000 bail and is expected to appear in court on January 2, 2025.
This is the third known attempt on Trump’s life since he announced his candidacy for the upcoming U.S. presidential election. In a previous incident, a bullet grazed Trump's ear during a speech and another individual was caught with weapons near one of Trump’s golf clubs.
