NEW DELHI: The Goddess of Justice has opened her eyes. It was Chief Justice DY Chandrachud who took the historic step of Indianising the sculpture by removing the blindfold on the eyes. The Constitution of India in the left hand instead of the sword. It sends a message that the law is not blind. The sword was replaced by the Constitution to convey the message that justice would be ensured under the Constitution. Colonial practices were replaced. The new bronze statue was installed in the Judges' Library of the Supreme Court.
The blindfold was to convey the message was that justice will be served with equanimity irrespective of power, wealth, etc. The sword was a symbol of punishment for injustice.
