Symbols can emotionally influence the human mind. The national flag is a symbol of the pride of our country. In moments of rare achievements and extreme joys, we hoist the national flag to the sky. Similarly, to record the grief of the nation, the national flag placed atop the administrative centres is lowered. The rhetoric of whether it would be sad if a flag is flown half mast is of no use here. Because, that's how much importance human beings give to each symbol. Insulting the flag of a nation or party is considered to be an insult to that country or party.
All symbols have a handful of messages to tell people, not through words. The value of the symbol is judged to be the richness of the meaning of that message. The message that the image of the goddess of justice conveys mainly is equality in the administration of justice. Justice should be served by giving equal consideration to both the parties in any case. The evidence should be weighed on the scales and the judgment should be made by finding out who deserves justice. There should be no distinction between rich, poor, strong or weak in the face of justice. The judgment should be impartial and without looking at the face. The eyes of the goddess of justice were blindfolded to signify this. It was the British who shaped the Indian judicial system and symbols. The sword in the hand of the Goddess of Justice conveys the message of power to administer justice. The most important thing in a symbol is the scales that stand at an equal level.
Many prominent personalities had pointed out after independence that it was not right to have the eyes of the goddess of justice blindfolded. Those in favour of the argument that the blindfold on those eyes should be removed said that the blindfold would deliver a misinterpretation of blind justice. The Supreme Court has made history by untying the blindfold of the goddess of justice. The decision was taken under the leadership of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. Instead of the sword, the Indian Constitution has been placed in the statue's left hand. That's a bigger change than the blindfold on the eyes. The sword is often a symbol of ruthlessness. It raises respect from fear. However, what the Constitution upholds is respect for rights. It conveys the message that the judiciary is not to be feared, but to be relied upon. The bronze statue with these changes has been installed in the Judges' Library of the Supreme Court. May this change of character usher in new changes in the path of justice.
