THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central Meteorological Department has informed that there is a possibility of isolated heavy rain in the state in the coming days. Yellow alert has been announced in Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta and Idukki today.

Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts are on yellow alert for tomorrow and day after tomorrow. A yellow alert has been issued in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki on 23rd. A chance of isolated heavy rain is forecast. Heavy rains mean rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours. The Central Meteorological Department has also warned that there is a possibility of rain with thunder and lightning at isolated places in Kerala from October 20 to 23.

National Oceanography and Research Center orange alert remains in place for all coastal districts of Kerala. There is a possibility of high waves and black sea phenomenon in coastal areas of Kerala. The National Center for Oceanography and Oceanography (INCOIS) has warned that there is a possibility of high waves of 1.0 to 1.5 meters and swell surge phenomena along Kerala coast tomorrow (21/10/2024) till 11.30 pm. Coastal areas, especially low-lying areas, are prone to inundation. A caution has been issued for high waves and black sea phenomenon on Kanyakumari shores.

Precautions

Thunderstorms are dangerous. They cause great damage to human and animal life, electrical and communication networks and appliances connected to electrical conductors. Therefore, the public should take the following precautions from the time the cloud starts to be seen. Do not hesitate to take this precaution as lightning may not always be visible.

At the first sign of lightning, move to a safe building immediately. Staying in open areas increases the chance of being struck by lightning.

Keep windows and doors closed during high winds and thunderstorms. Stay away from doors and windows. Stay inside the building and try not to touch the wall or floor as much as possible.

Unplug household appliances. Avoid proximity to electrical appliances during thunderstorms.

Avoid using the telephone during thunderstorms. It is okay to use a mobile phone.

Avoid playing outdoors and on terraces, including children, if the weather is cloudy.

Do not stand under trees during thunderstorms. Do not park vehicles under trees.
