PUNE: After 12 years, India is on the brink of losing a Test series on home soil, with New Zealand dominating the second Test at Pune's MCA Stadium. The visitors have taken a commanding lead of over 300 runs, leaving India with a daunting task. Given the current situation, India would need a miracle to win this match. India, attempting to surpass New Zealand's first innings score of 259, was bowled out for a mere 156 runs. New Zealand, now batting in their second innings, stands at 198/5.
Resuming play on the second day at 16/1, India was dismantled by spinner Mitchell Santner, who claimed seven wickets. Ravindra Jadeja (38), Yashasvi Jaiswal (30) and Shubman Gill (30) were the only ones to show resistance in the Indian lineup. Rohit Sharma (0), Virat Kohli (1), Rishabh Pant (18), Sarfaraz Khan (11), and Ravichandran Ashwin (4) failed to make an impact. Washington Sundar remained unbeaten with 18 runs.
New Zealand put up a better batting performance in the second innings as well. Captain Tom Latham led from the front with a half-century (86). Kiwis lost the key wickets of Devon Conway (17), Will Young (23), Rachin Ravindra (9) and Daryl Mitchell (18). Tom Blundell (30*) and Glenn Phillips (9*) remain unbeaten. For India, Washington Sundar has claimed four wickets in the second innings, while Ravichandran Ashwin secured one wicket.
