THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Meteorological Department has warned that there is a possibility of heavy rains accompanied by lightning in Kerala. IMD has warned of thunderstorms accompanied with lightning at isolated places in Kerala till Sunday, October 27.
Yellow alert has been sounded in eight districts on Saturday. A yellow alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki and Thrissur districts.
Heavy rain warnings have been issued in eight districts today. An orange alert has been issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki and Thrissur districts. Yellow alert has been issued in Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts.
Special instructions for public
Those living in areas prone to landslides, mudflows and inundation should move to safer places as per the instructions of the authorities.
Those living on the banks of rivers and in the lower reaches of dams should also move out as per the instructions of the authorities in anticipation of the risk.
Those living in disaster-prone areas must ensure that camps are opened in their area and move there during the day itself. Local bodies and revenue authorities can be contacted for this.
As there is a possibility of strong winds, those living in houses that are not closed and those living in houses where the roof is not strong should exercise special caution. Those who are in danger should contact the authorities and move to safer places as a precautionary measure.
The dangers of trees being uprooted and posts collapsing in the wind should also be noted. In the event of heavy rains, one should not cross rivers, or use rivers or other water bodies for bathing, fishing or for any other purpose.
One should not climb flyovers above water bodies for better views, take selfies or stand in groups. Avoid non-essential travel during heavy rains. Tourist trips to waterfalls, water bodies and hilly areas should be avoided completely until the rain warning changes.
