PALAKKAD: The court has awarded life sentence to the accused Prabhu Kumar (43) and K Suresh Kumar (45) in the Thenkurussi honour killing case which shocked the hometown. A fine of Rs 50,000 has been imposed on each.

Aneesh alias Appu (27), son of Aarumugham of Ilamandam, was hacked to death by his wife’s family on December 25 in 2020. He was murdered by his wife Haritha’s father and uncle on the 88th day of their wedding. Her uncle Suresh Kumar is the first accused and her father Prabhu Kumar, the second accused. The incident happened on December 25 in 2020.

Aneesh and Haritha were in love and got married. Aneesh is from a backward community. Family of Aneesh was financially very weak, while Haritha hailed from a middle-class family. Her family was against the marriage and this led them to commit the crime.

The prosecution argued that the accused be hanged. The court had earlier found the two guilty in the case. The case investigated by the local police was later handed over to the district crime branch. Aneesh was a painter. The two were in a relationship since their school days. Haritha's relatives had threatened Aneesh several times after the marriage. Suresh had threatened to kill Aneesh in three months’ time.

On the fateful day, Aneesh and his brother were going to a shop. Prabhu Kumar and Suresh together attacked the two. Aneesh sustained serious injuries when attacked with swords and rods. Aneesh died before reaching the hospital. After committing the crime, Prabhu Kumar fled to his relative’s house in Coimbatore. He was caught from there.
Haritha demanded that her father and uncle be hanged. The offenders should be punished. They should be awarded maximum punishment, said Haritha.
