KOLKATA: In a tragic incident, three children were killed and two others were critically injured after a house caught fire during Diwali celebrations in Howrah in West Bengal. The deceased children were aged 9, 4 and 2 years. The other two children are undergoing treatment for severe injuries. The authorities said that the fire broke out while the children were bursting crackers. The incident took place in Uluberia Municipality.

As the children were setting off fireworks, sparks fell onto other nearby fireworks. As a result, a neighbouring house caught fire, according to the police. The explosion of a gas cylinder further intensified the extent of the accident.

Upon receiving information, two fire engines rushed to the spot and doused the fire. Authorities credited timely intervention for preventing the fire from spreading to nearby houses.

Although the three injured children were immediately rushed to Uluberia Medical College Hospital, their lives couldn't be saved. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and other formalities.
