It is shocking that 52 teachers in schools in the state of Kerala are under suspension for their involvement in POCSO cases. Deputy directors of education have been tasked to complete the investigation and take strict action, including dismissing these teachers from service. Students studying in LP and UP classes are the most vulnerable victims of sexual harassment by teachers. These children look at the teachers with fear. Therefore, many children are reluctant to disclose the abuse even if they are subjected to it. The case arises when the parents come to know about it. Even if there is no police case, action can be taken against the teacher who committed the crime if the information disclosed by the child is communicated to the deputy director of education through the headmaster of the school. It also requires that it be done within three months.
Teachers are the most respected and honoured section of society. It cannot be seen except with shock as they give up their teacherhood and status and become human animals. Though it is reported that 52 teachers are involved in the POCSO case, it is certain that if the actual figures are revealed, it will be twice as much as the ones disclosed. Many teachers are treated as gentlemen because many parents keep the incident a secret for the sake of their children's future and to avoid being humiliated in society. The counselling conducted in schools has been able to bring such people to justice to a good extent in the recent past. After the parents, it is the lady teachers whom the students rely upon to share their ordeal. However, justice may not always be done even if that is done. Many people would not be interested in seeing colleagues get caught up in cases and thrown out. It is customary to conduct a preliminary inquiry and expel teachers who were accused of sexual harassment if a complaint is received. Children who have faced abuse can be easily identified by their behaviour. Often, teachers take steps to subject them to counselling. Following this, the guilty teacher will be expelled from the school.
Exploitation of children can be prevented to a good extent if strict monitoring and inspection are ensured under the leadership of the head teachers. The possibility of appointing only lady teachers in the lower classes can also be explored. Although it is practically difficult, it can be tried at least step by step.
It has also become common for tuition classes held at home and outside to become a location of abuse. Parents should take care not to create the situation for exploitation as much as possible. Don't make room for a single child to be given tuition for any reason. There have been experiences where the cognitive state of children who are mentally injured while they are children becomes problematic even after they grow up.
It is a pity that schools become a place for exploitation and abuse by teachers. One of the evils of this era is that the teaching community, which is supposed to be the saviour and guide for the children after the parents, becomes the demon for the children. There is no need to show any leniency towards the guilty teachers. There should be no complacency to leave them to the law. The children themselves should point out the teachers who cross the line. Parents should be prepared to give their children the strength and confidence to do so. If children can be raised to be responsive in childhood, they will be able to stand up courageously against violence not only in school but also outside.
