THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI, through its mouthpiece, has voiced sharp criticism against the state police for failing to file a case against MoS and BJP leader Suresh Gopi for allegedly making communal remarks related to the Waqf. The criticism centers around Suresh Gopi’s controversial reference to "Waqf barbarism," which CPI claims were anti-Muslim in tone and could even be grounds for sedition.

Suresh Gopi, in a campaign speech at Wayanad, reportedly referred to Waqf in a derogatory manner, insinuating it as barbarism without directly mentioning the Waqf Board's name. He suggested that the Waqf Act would soon be implemented, describing it as a "barbaric thing that would be put to an end." He went on to imply that other regions, like Munambam, are on a path similar to Manipur, hinting at issues of ethnic and religious tension.

The CPI also questioned the lack of police action on BJP State Vice President B Gopalakrishnan’s remarks, which were similarly contentious. Gopalakrishnan commented on the Waqf land issue, expressing concerns about revered religious sites such as Sabarimala and Velankanni potentially facing claims from the Waqf. He argued that the amendment to the Waqf Act would prevent such occurrences, stoking further controversy.

The Congress, too, has voiced its dissatisfaction over the police's inaction. Congress leader Anoop VR had previously lodged a complaint with the police, arguing that Suresh Gopi's speech in Kambalakkad contained communal remarks; however, no case has been registered to date.
