KOCHI: Accidents can strike not only on the road but even where a vehicle is parked. Unexpected hazards, ranging from microbial invasions to small animals like mice and beetles, can cause significant damage and even accidents. Research from the Automobile Department of Kalamassery ITI highlights the risks posed by these hidden threats, revealing that microbes and pests can damage vehicle components, leading to potential breakdowns and accidents.

Microbes can weaken cables, destroy plastic parts and puncture fuel lines. One particular risk comes from beetles that attack the rubber section of fuel pipes connecting the tank to the engine. This can result in fuel leaks and a serious fire hazard when starting the vehicle. The study found that ethanol-blended petrol tends to attract beetles, especially in regions near orchards, hilly areas and agricultural zones.

While a variety of rodent repellents and chemical deterrents are available online, experts caution that many are scams. Regular vehicle inspections are crucial to catching these issues before they lead to costly damage or accidents.

Precautions

1. Keep the parking area clean — free from debris, leaves and garbage.

2. Avoid parking near forests, grassy areas, or unmaintained garbage sites.

3. Keep food and debris out of the vehicle to deter animals and pests.

4. Start any infrequently used vehicle regularly to prevent pest habitation.

5. Inspect the vehicle for holes, gaps, or signs of animal activity

Preventive measures

1. Use pepper spray or insecticide sprays as repellents.

2. Cover accessible areas with netting to block rodents and squirrels from entering.
