ERNAKULAM: The infamous Kuruva gang, known for their brazen robberies, is suspected to have extended its activities to Ernakulam district. This follows recent reports of their presence in Alappuzha. CCTV footage from Chendamangalam and North Paravur areas captured two masked individuals attempting to break into more than 10 houses early this morning.
The incidents occurred between 2 am and 3 am, with the thieves primarily targeting back doors. In one case near the Thuyithara Bridge in North Paravur, the residents were awakened by noises around 2 am. Acting quickly, they turned on the lights, startling the intruders, who fled the scene. The family alerted neighbors and nearby relatives, prompting a collective response.
Residents who later reviewed CCTV footage confirmed the presence of the gang across multiple houses in the area. Although the footage suggests two individuals, it remains unclear if all incidents involved the same perpetrators. The thieves were seen wearing masks and carrying weapons, showcasing their preparedness.
The police have launched an investigation but are yet to uncover significant leads. Authorities had previously issued warnings about the Kuruva gang's possible arrival in Alappuzha, urging residents in neighboring districts to remain vigilant.
The Kuruva gang is notorious for its meticulous planning. By day, they pose as vendors collecting and selling food items, using the opportunity to study potential targets. At night, they carry out their robberies, relying on their physical agility and stealth to evade capture.
The gang is known to operate across districts, frequently retreating to places like Tirunelveli and Madurai after a spree. They avoid staying in one location for long, often hiding in fields, bushes, or under bridges. The group comprises members of varying ages, including individuals over 55, many of whom are experienced and difficult to subdue.
Several years ago, members of the Kuruva gang from Palakkad were arrested, but the gang's decentralized nature has allowed them to continue their activities across Kerala and neighboring states.
