KELAKAM: The residents of Kelakam Malayampadi are still not out from the shock induced by the mini-bus accident, that claimed the lives of two theatre artists. According to locals, accidents are common in the 'S' bend in Malayampadi and the subsequent descent of the road.
According to the available information, the over-dependence on Google Maps while passing through an unknown terrain invited the tragedy. The route was narrow, filled with curves and steep descents. It is unusual for heavy vehicles to pass through this route. Due to heavy landslides and incessant rains, the traffic through Nedumpoil to Mananthavady in the Periya mountain pass was blocked.
The bus ferrying the theatre artists was stopped at Periya due to traffic regulations. The group then relied on Google Maps to take an alternative route. The route was through Kottiyoor connecting Boys Town to Mananthavady. The vehicle lost control of the Malayampadi S bend and fell into a gorge. Shockingly, the van was found hanging in a tree down the gorge.
Nearby resident rushed to the spot hearing screams and cries of help. The locals then engaged in a rescue operation and broke the window shield to take the injured to the hospital. Varkey, a resident said that the rescue operations were hampered due to poor light in the area. The timely intervention of the locals reduced the severity of the accident. With the help of the police and fire brigade, the injured were taken to the nearest private hospital.
