CHENNAI: Actress and BJP supporter Kasthuri Shankar, known for her outspoken nature, has been remanded in custody until November 29 following her arrest over alleged defamatory remarks against the Telugu community residing in Tamil Nadu. She will be transferred to Chennai’s Puzhal Central Jail.
Kasthuri was arrested late last night by a special investigation team from Tamil Nadu at a producer’s residence in Gachibowli, Hyderabad. She was transported by road to Chennai, where she was taken into custody. Upon being presented in court, Kasthuri briefly addressed the media, calling for an end to political chaos.
The controversy stems from remarks made by the actress during an event organized by the Hindu Makkal Party in Egmore, Chennai. Kasthuri reportedly claimed that "Telugu people, who came as attendants to the palaces of Tamil kings 300 years ago, now assert themselves as Tamils." The statement sparked widespread protests, particularly in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
In response to the backlash, Kasthuri previously clarified on social media that her remarks were misinterpreted. She emphasized that her comment was directed at a specific group and not the Telugu community as a whole. She also issued an apology, stating that she did not intend to offend anyone and expressed regret if her words caused hurt.
