MANIPUR: The BJP government in Manipur is in crisis after the National People's Party (NPP) withdrew its support. With the outbreak of riots, the central government is taking more steps. A high-level meeting will be held today at 12 noon under the leadership of Home Minister Amit Shah.
The NPP withdrew support saying the Biren Singh government had failed to end the 18-month-old conflict. Although the government may not be fortified, its image has suffered a major tarnish. Meanwhile, there are indications that the NPF will also withdraw its support. Amit Shah spoke to Biren Singh this morning. He expressed his deep displeasure over the NPP leaving the alliance. The current report is that despite the intervention of the national leadership, the NPP did not yield.
The Mayites have demanded strict action against the armed groups. Meitei organizations have given an ultimatum to the Chief Minister that action should be taken within 24 hours. Security has been beefed up as mobs attacked the Chief Minister's residence. The opposition parties also demanded that the Chief Minister resign immediately.
Former Chief Minister and Congress leader Ibobi Singh has sought time to meet the Prime Minister and Home Minister. Protests are strong as the Prime Minister does not respond and does not visit Manipur even as the conflict and killings escalate. It is informed that crucial decisions may be taken in the meeting chaired by the Home Minister.
