THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: So far, 68,756 connections have been provided under K-FON, the state government's vanity project to provide high-speed internet at affordable rates. This includes commercial and free connections in government offices. The project started in June last year.
The highest in these lots is the commercial connection, which has reached 39,878. The process was started last March. It is provided to households and institutions for a modest fee.
Slow progress was reported in providing free connection during the first stage. A total of 14000 was targeted in the first phase but only 5236 have been disbursed. This is due to the delay in some areas failing to complete the connection on time. However, out of 29,216 government offices targeted, the connection was successfully provided to 23,642.
"The target of one lakh connections will be achieved by December. Fiber deployment has been completed including in rural areas” said Dr Santosh Babu, Managing Director of K-FON.
