THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ISRO has launched its GSAT-20 communication satellite aboard SpaceX's Falcon rocket, marking the first time an Indian satellite has been launched on an American rocket. The launch took place at 12:01 AM IST on Tuesday from Space Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The satellite successfully reached its designated orbit at 12:36 PM IST.
Post-launch, ISRO’s Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Byalalu, Bengaluru, took control of the satellite. GSAT-20 is India’s first satellite to operate exclusively on gamma-band frequencies, advancing the nation’s communication technology.
This collaboration with SpaceX was necessitated by the satellite’s weight, which exceeded the capacity of India’s GSLV Mark III rocket, capable of launching payloads up to 4,000 kg. Heavier Indian satellites were previously launched using the European Space Agency’s Ariane rockets. However, due to unavailability in Ariane’s launch schedule, SpaceX was approached to carry out this mission.
The launch costs, managed by In-Space, ISRO’s commercial arm, were higher compared to those for the Ariane rockets, reflecting the premium services of SpaceX.
