THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thunderstorms are likely in the state in the coming days. The extremely low pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours and move towards the coast of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu. As a result of this, the Indian Meteorological Department has warned that light / moderate rains with thundershowers are likely in Kerala for the next five days.

The Central Meteorological Department has informed that light rain is likely at isolated places in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta in the next three hours. Heavy rain is likely at isolated places on Saturday and Sunday.

A yellow alert has been issued in various districts on Saturday and Sunday. A rain warning is in place in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki on Saturday and in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkad on Sunday. Heavy rainfall is defined as rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department has announced that fishing should not be allowed off the Kerala coast till Friday and that there is no restriction on fishing off the Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts.
