NEW DELHI: President Draupadi Murmu has appointed Delhi High Court Chief Justice Manmohan as a judge of the Supreme Court. The Centre accepted the recommendation of the Supreme Court collegium. Justice Manmohan was elevated to ensure representation in the Delhi High Court in the Supreme Court. At present, there is only one judge from the Delhi High Court, Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, in the Supreme Court . With the appointment of Justice Manmohan, the strength of Supreme Court judges will reach 33. 34 judges are required to reach the full strength.

Senior judge Vibhu Bakhru has been appointed as the acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Justice Manmohan is ranked second in the national seniority list of high court judges. On March 13, 2008, he became a judge of the Delhi High Court. He became the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on September 29.
The Supreme Court collegium had recommended Justice Manmohan's elevation as a judge of the Supreme Court on November 28. His father, Jagmohan Malhotra, was a former Union minister and governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
