THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A decision has been taken to conduct an immediate medical examination to all children of the state child welfare committee. The district child welfare council will write a letter to the District Medical Officer (DMO) demanding to entrust a special medical team for the examination. Three women caretakers of CWC were arrested on charges of injuring a two-and-a-half-year-old girl on her private parts for wetting the bed. The action is following the revelation of a former caretaker that more children are beaten. The children will also be subjected to counselling.
The former caretaker of the council had come forward the other day with more revelations on the physical abuse of a two-and-a-half-year-old girl in the Child Welfare Committee. The former caretaker, who did not want to be named, told a media that caretakers regularly harass children for wetting beds in their sleep and that genital abuse is a common sight.
She said the caretakers who complain are usually isolated and the authorities pay no attention even if complained. The accused in the case have committed crimes in the past. The caretaker, who worked in the Child Welfare Committee until a few months ago, said that even if they are temporarily transferred, they are usually re-appointed.
With this, it has been decided to conduct an immeidate medical examination of all the children in the State Child Welfare Committee. The special team will also include mental health experts. It has been decided to take strong action if any information about harassment comes to light during counselling. It has also been decided to conduct lightning inspections with the monitoring committee at regular intervals.
