MUMBAI: Six people were killed and 49 injured after a government bus rammed several other vehicles in Mumbai's Kurla area Monday night. Some are in a critical condition. The accident happened Monday night at 9.50 pm. The initial assessment is that the driver lost control of the bus due to over speeding.
The bus that met with the accident was going towards Andheri from Kurla station. The bus first hit an auto and then hit pedestrians and several other vehicles. The bus then rammed into the gates of an apartment. The injured were admitted to Sion and Kurla Bhabha hospitals. Eyewitnesses said the bus that caused the accident also hit a police jeep.
A three-month-old Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) bus was involved in the accident, a Tardeo Regional Transport Office (RTO) official said. Traffic was disrupted in the area for a long time following the accident. The bus driver who caused the accident has been taken into custody. Some locals have criticized the narrowness of the road due to encroachment by small traders and others. Police said that an investigation has been launched into the incident.
