CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for educational institutions in several districts following heavy rains. As rains are intensifying in many parts of the state, the collectors have declared a holiday for schools in districts including Madurai, Tiruchi and Mayiladuthurai.


Mayiladuthurai District Collector A P Mahabharathi and Madurai Collector M S Sangeetha declared a holiday for schools Friday morning. However, the Tiruvallur District Collector informed that there will be no holiday for educational institutions in the district and that the principal should declare a holiday if there is a situation like waterlogging.


Schools and colleges in Tiruchi and Thanjavur districts have been declared a holiday today. Schools in Pudukkottai and Karur districts are also on holiday. Schools and colleges in Chennai city will function normally as there is less rain this morning. Minister A Namassivayam announced that all educational institutions in Karaikal and Puducherry will remain closed. Schools in Salem and Cuddalore districts have also been declared a holiday.


Due to heavy rains, schools in Dindigul and Theni and schools in Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts have been closed. Schools and colleges in Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Perambalur districts were declared holiday last night. Schools in Virudhunagar district have been given a holiday. Ariyalur Collector P Ratnasamy declared a holiday for schools and colleges. Nagapattinam District Collector P Akash declared a holiday only for schools in the district. Schools in Karur, Tiruppur and Valparai districts were also closed for schools only.


There was heavy rain in the southern parts of Tamil Nadu yesterday. Many tourist destinations including Kodaikanal were deserted. The Water Resources Department announced that 1000 cusecs of water will be released from the Chembarambakkam reservoir and 500 cusecs from the Red Hills reservoir this morning.
