SEOUL: South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been impeached by Parliament. 204 members of the 300-member parliament voted in favour of impeachment. An impeachment vote requires the support of 200 members to pass. The declaration of martial law in the country by Yoon is what led to his impeachment.
Yoon declared martial law unexpectedly but withdrew it within six hours under pressure. He had apologized for imposing martial law. Yoon imposed martial law in the country after accusing opposition parties of sympathizing with North Korea and trying to undermine the regime. This had caused huge protests in South Korea.
With Yoon suspended from office, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will take over as South Korea's acting president. South Korea's Constitutional Court will decide Yoon's future. The ruling will be implemented within 180 days. If the court approves the impeachment, Yoon will become the second president to be ousted in South Korea.
The impeachment motion against Yoon Suk Yeol last week had failed. The president was helped by the absence of 105 members of Yun's People Power Party from the impeachment vote in parliament.
