THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: While the Kerala Motor Vehicle Department is exploring the implementation of a probationary license system, where new drivers would be issued a probationary license instead of a permanent one after passing their driving test, it may need the central government's approval to implement the system. Since the Central Motor Vehicles Act lacks provisions for probationary licenses, and no other state has proposed a similar system, the chances of Kerala's request being approved appear slim. The initiative would also necessitate updates to existing software systems.

Transport Commissioner CH Nagaraju has spearheaded discussions on introducing probationary licenses in the state, aiming to promote safer driving practices and reduce accidents. Inspired by systems implemented in countries like Australia, the proposed probationary period would range from six months to a year. The Transport Commissioner said that discussions in this regard are ongoing.

The department's analysis highlights that issuing a permanent license immediately often contributes to accidents, particularly among inexperienced drivers. A recent incident in Alappuzha, where a car crash claimed the lives of six medical students, underscores this concern. The car's driver had received his license only five months prior, and lack of experience was identified as a key factor in the tragedy.
