THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPM district secretariat has taken a decision to disband the SFI unit in Thiruvananthapuram University College. The action was taken following the activities of the SFI activists of University College tarnishing the party. University College is one of the strongest centres of SFI in the district.

Although the University SFI committee has taken several actions to put the CPM on the defensive, the CPM district leadership turned a blind eye to them all the time. However, the district secretariat was forced to take strong action following the brutal attack towards a disabled student came to light. An ad hoc committee will be formed in place of the dissolved committee.

Meantime, the police are not keen in their investigation against the SFI leaders who attacked the disable student of University College. The action has been suspended pending the verdict on the anticipatory bail application filed by the accused who were not arrested despite being booked under non-bailable sections. Meanwhile, based on the report submitted by the disciplinary committee of the college, the principal suspended four students from the college. Unit secretary and P G Zoology second-year student Vidhu Udaya, president and third year philosophy student Amalchand, third-year history student Mithun, and third-year Botany student Alan Jamal have been suspended.

The attack was on December 2 at 5 pm. The student attacked was Muhammed Anas (19) of Konniyur Perumkulam. His friend Afzal, who tried to stop the attack, was also beaten. Anas was brutally attacked by stepping on his weak leg and hitting him on the head with an iron bar. Anas, in his statement to the police, said he was attacked for not doing organizational work.
