NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah severely lambasted Congress in the Rajya Sabha debate over the constitution. Shah said that the same congress now vehemently protesting against the ‘one nation one election’ policy, has in the past amended the constitution to avoid electoral defeats.

“They made amendments in constitutions fearing electoral defeat. They will blame the voting machine if faced with defeat. They even extended the Rajya Sabha tenure from five to six years.” Shah scoffed at Rahul Gandhi for taking a ‘hollow constitution book’ wherever he goes.

AMIT SHAH:

“Ambedkar has said that no matter how good the constitution is, an incompetent ruler can turn things awry. The first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru brought the First Amendment right before the general elections to ban freedom of expression. In 1971, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi passed the 24th Amendment to regulate fundamental rights.

Opposing the Mandal Commission report, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi belittled OBC people saying that reservation given to OBC would end up bringing unqualified candidates. Now they demand to change the 50 percent reservation limit targeting the Muslim vote bank.

Due to his contrarian opinion in the Shah Bano case, congress expelled the now Kerala governor Arif Mohammad Khan. Khan advocated for Muslim women's rights which couldn’t find takers within Congress. Nehru brought the Muslim Personal Act but the same Nehru’s congress is opposing the uniform civil code.

The Modi government has introduced amendments aimed at implementing reforms including GST in the country. BJP made 22 amendments in 16 years. BJP ended the practice of presenting the central budget in the evening to adjust to the British queen's time. Nehru rejected the proposal of Seth Govind Das to name the country Bharat but kowtowed to the British suggestion of the name India. The irony is that the new opposition alliance backed the British suggestion and named the alliance INDIA. “
