KOCHI: The Kerala government informed the High Court that it has submitted the data related to the Wayanad landslide disaster to the central government. The government said that the data was provided as per the court's earlier directions. The state also submitted a letter containing details sent to the Union Home Secretary in the High Court.
However, the central government informed the court that it had not officially received the letter. Subsequently, the state government assured the Centre that it would send the letter following proper procedures today itself. The court had asked the Centre how much money would it allocate immediately for urgent needs. It was at this point that the central government stated it had not officially received the letter. Consequently, the case was adjourned to January 10.
The court has taken a mediatory stance in the case. Acting as an intermediary between the central and state governments, the court had earlier directed the submission of data for Wayanad's relief efforts. Following this, the Principal Secretary of Revenue informed the court today about the details of the Disaster Relief Fund. The court had sought clarity on the available balance in the fund and directed the submission of details, including the amounts spent so far.
The state government informed the High Court that only Rs 181 crore remains in its relief fund. The state government wants the central government to give a concession to spend Rs 120 crore from the state disaster management fund. The High Court asked the central government whether it could relax the norms for Wayanad's relief efforts.
The government submitted the complete details of the Disaster Relief Fund before the court. The SDRF contains Rs 700 crore, but only Rs 181 crore can be utilized. The remaining amount has been earmarked for other purposes. To spend this Rs 181 crore immediately for Wayanad, certain relaxations in central guidelines are required. The court is currently making efforts in this regard.
