MOSCOW: In a major geopolitical move, Kremlin for the first time since 2022, expressed willingness for talks to end the war with Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his wish to reach a detente, so as to bring peace to the region. Putin said he is ready for compromise talks on Ukraine war with the new president-elect of the United States Donald Trump.

Putin's statement was based on his assessment that Russian forces had achieved their primary objective against Ukraine. He was speaking at the annual question-and-answer program on Russian state-sponsored TV.

Russia is ready to negotiate with Trump, including on the Ukraine war. Putin in his talks raised hope of resuming talks once Trump becomes US president again. Earlier during campaigning, Trump had vowed to end the Ukraine war within a day, if elected president. After his election victory, there were rumours about Trump having a covert phone call with Putin to discuss the Ukraine war.
