KATTAPPANA: Marykutty, wife of Sabu, who committed suicide for not receiving his deposit funds from CPM-ruled Kattappana Rural Co-operative Society said that her husband faced humiliation from bank employees. Marykutty also blamed the society employees for constantly threatening her family.
MARYKUTTY:
“We used to deposit money in the bank since 2007. A woman working in the bank convinced my husband to put a small deposit with them. He deposited money while working in Australia. When there came a need to sell our land in Kanjikuzhy, Sabu went to the bank requesting money but the secretary didn’t allow it.
There was a need for 10 lakh rupees. Some money was allowed from the bank for us to pay the advance. But when asked for the full payment, the bank turned their back. There were many situations when Sabu had to leave the society in tears.
Considering our plight, the board members agreed to pay Rs 5 lakh every month. Later, the decision was changed and they agreed to pay us Rs 3 lakh every month. Three lakh was given to us in January. Soon again, the decision was altered. This time they agreed to pay Rs one lakh every month with interest, but it was not followed properly.
A medical emergency came our way and I was suggested to undergo an operation. The total need was Rs two lakh rupees. Hoping to claim insurance, we received a shock at the last moment learning that the claim could not be made. When my daughter went and begged, the society allowed Rs 40,000. Soon, another 40,000 was given, but what to do with Rs 80,000? We wanted Rs two lakh immediately.
On the last visit to the office, a staff named Binoy shouted expletives and pushed Sabu. Upon returning home, he told me about the incident and was dejected. He also expressed a wish to meet Joy Vettikuzhy sir as a final try to come out of the crisis. It was me who stopped Sabu from doing an open protest in front of the bank. I asked him to wait for some more time.”
