triple-talaq

MUMBAI: The police have registered a case against a man for allegedly giving triple talaq to his wife for refusing to sleep with his boss. The accused is a software engineer hailing from Kalyan in Maharashtra.

The incident took place on December 19. While attending a party, the 45-year-old engineer asked his 28-year-old wife to sleep with his boss. When she refused, the engineer asked her to arrange Rs 15 lakhs from her parents to settle obligations with his first wife. However, the wife refused this demand as well, prompting the man to give instant triple talaq. He then physically assaulted her and threw her out of the house.

The couple got married in January this year. The first few months of their marriage were reportedly harmonious. However, problems arose when the man began asking for money. He insisted on Rs 15 lakh to settle the dues from his previous marriage and pressured his wife to get the amount from her parents.

Arguments over this demand became frequent. After the accused declared triple talaq, the woman approached the Sambhaji Nagar Police Station and filed a complaint. Following the investigation, the police arrested the accused and registered a case.

Triple talaq has been a criminal offence in India since 2019. The accused has been charged under sections 115(2), 351(2), 351(3), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as relevant provisions of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.
