NEW DELHI: A new rule is coming into effect as a blow to expatriates and other air travellers. The regulation is being introduced in the hand baggage rules for air travellers. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has introduced these restrictions to strengthen security measures, particularly in response to the growing number of air travellers in the country.
Under the new rule, from now on, passengers will be allowed to carry only one bag onboard. The maximum weight of the bag should not exceed seven kilograms. Additionally, restrictions have been imposed on the size of the handbag as well. As part of the new regulation, if passengers have more than one bag in hand, they will now be required to check in each one of them.
Passengers who booked tickets before May 2, 2024, will receive exemptions. However, no concessions will be granted for any bookings or changes made after this date. Airlines have also been instructed to impose additional baggage charges for hand luggage exceeding the prescribed weight or size limits. The size of the handbag should not exceed 55 centimetres (21.6 inches) in height, 40 centimetres (15.7 inches) in length, and 20 centimetres (7.8 inches) in width. The advisory urges passengers to comply with these rules while preparing for their journeys.
