THRISSUR: Former minister and CPI leader V S Sunil Kumar came forward harshly criticizing corporation mayor M K Varghese. He also alleged that though the mayor is from the Left Front, his loyalty is towards the BJP. It is believed that Sunil Kumar was angered after Varghese accepted a Christmas cake from the BJP state president as part of Sneha Sandeshayatra. He also told a news channel that the act of accepting the cake was planned.

‘This incident revealed his political affiliation with the BJP. The steps he had taken helped the BJP candidate in the last Lok Sabha elections. He proved that even though he is a leftist, his loyalty is there. The LDF should decide on removing the mayor. He knows very well that he will not lose his position no matter what he does. If the stand that he has to be tolerated no matter what he does arises, we will not be able to do anything,' said Sunil Kumar.

The Left rule in the Thrissur Corporation is moving forward on the strength of M K Varghese’ seat. The CPM fears that if he is removed from the post of mayor, he will withdraw support and the corporation will fall. That is why they are hesitant to take action against the mayor. He had praised Suresh Gopi in the last Lok Sabha elections. When this came under criticism, the mayor responded by saying that one should not mix politics with words.

He said about Surendran's visit that he would welcome anyone who comes to his house on Christmas, the day of love, and that he had no other thought. He also said that he was happy that Surendran had come. Surendran replied that the meeting with the mayor was not political and was only a cordial visit.
