NEW YORK: Former US president Jimmy Carter passed away. He was 100. He was a Nobel peace laureate and the oldest former US President. He had served as President from 1977 to 1981. He was 39th president of the USA.


Carter became president after the Watergate corruption allegation and the Vietnam War shook American politics. Jimmy Carter died Sunday afternoon in Plains town, Georgia, according to the organization he founded, The Carter Center. He was also a groundnut farmer before becoming president. He breathed his last with all his family members nearby.


US President Joe Biden said that an extraordinary leader, philanthropist and statesman has been lost. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Although he was diagnosed with cancer, he survived and had health problems including melanoma that spread to his liver and brain.


Carter, the Democratic candidate, won the presidency by defeating Gerald Ford. But lost to Ronald Reagan in 1981.

Carter's wife Rosalynn of 77 years died on November 19, 2023 at age 96. He is survived by four children three sons and a daughter.
