MELBOURNE: Miracles should happen for the Indian cricket team to qualify for the final of the World Test Championship. After losing the Boxing Day Test against Australia, India stands on the brink of surrendering the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. If India wins the final Test starting on January 3 in Sydney and levels the series, they can retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, India can qualify for the WTC final only if Sri Lanka defeats Australia in the upcoming Test series.
With the Indian side suffering a defeat in Melbourne and trailing the series 2-1, fans and former players have come out heavily criticizing the skipper and the team management. Now, legendary player Sunil Gavaskar has weighed in on what India must do to win in the Sydney Test.
Gavaskar suggests that India urgently needs to drop two players from the team. He criticized India's over-reliance on Jasprit Bumrah throughout the series and opined that Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep, who failed to provide adequate support, should not play in Sydney.
Bumrah has been exceptional in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, taking 29 wickets so far. However, Siraj and Akash Deep's places in the team are under question due to their underwhelming performances. Gavaskar emphasized that India should experiment with new players in the next Test. Meanwhile, fans are also calling for senior batters, including captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, to retire, and for Rishabh Pant to be dropped.
