NEW DELHI: A new report revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a diamond worth US$ 20,000 (Rs 17.15 lakh) to US President Joe Biden's wife and First Lady Jill Biden. This is the most valuable gift Jill received in 2023, according to the annual accounting report. The diamond is now kept in the East Wing of the White House.
The White House officials have not decided what to do with Modi’s gift. In normal situations, valuable gifts or presents from world leaders are kept at the National Archives or put on display. US law requires public disclosure of gifts worth more than $480 from foreign leaders. Jill's prized possessions include a medal worth $14,063 presented to Jill Biden by the Ambassador of Ukraine, a $4,510 photo album gifted to her by the President and First Lady of Egypt.
Former South Korean President Yoon Sook Yeol, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Mongolian Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene and others have also offered prized gifts to Jill.
Yeol presented Biden with a photo album valued at $7,100. Zelensky presented a $2,400 collage and Erdene a $3,495 statue of Mongolian soldiers.
