The accused also told police the details of their 19 years of absconding life. The accused reached Pondicherry in 2008. After committing the murder, they traveled all over India for two years. They had saved their salary while working in the army. They traveled with this amount. They never called their relatives to avoid being caught.

The two, who had studied interior design earlier, came to Pondicherry and changed their names to Vishnu and Pradeep. Became friends with the locals there. They believed that they would never be caught after marrying natives of Pondicherry. However, the CBI shattered all their hopes.

The CBI Chennai unit arrested them from Pondicherry after 19 years. They murdered Ranjini (23) and her babies at her residence in Anchal. Dibil Kumar, a native of Anchal, and Rajesh, a native of Kannur, both former soldiers of the Army's Pathankot Regiment, were arrested. The three were killed on February 10, 2006, at her rented house in Anchal.

Ranjini's mother Shanthamma had gone to the panchayat office at 10 am. When she returned at 1 pm, found Ranjini dead with her throat slit lying on the floor and her children in the crib and bed. Another family living in the same house with them had seen Rajesh coming and going there on the day of the incident. From this, the police observed that Dibil Kumar and Rajesh were behind the murder.

Ranjini had filed a complaint with the police after she became pregnant with Dibil Kumar. Before that, he had asked her to abort the babies. Ranjini wanted to marry him.

With this, he planned the murder with his colleague Rajesh. The police had searched for the two, but could not find them. With this, Ranjini's family approached the high court. In 2008, the case was transferred to the CBI Chennai unit as per the high court order. Based on the recent information received, it was clear that the family was living in Pondicherry under other names.

Ranjini and Dibil Kumar, who were neighbors became close. Her mother Shanthamma was in the hospital in Thiruvananthapuram for treatment. Her relatives said Dibil Kumar abused her and impregnated her when she came to her house to get money for treatment.

However, the family members, including her mother, were not aware of this. She was found to be pregnant during a check-up conducted in the sixth month after experiencing physical discomfort. With this, Ranjini filed a complaint with the police and the human rights commission. Dibil Kumar refused to marry her. After her delivery, the human rights commission demanded to conduct a DNA test. Soon Dibil Kumar and Rajesh took leave from the army and returned homes to commit the crime.
