OTTAWA: After Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation, Anita Anand, the minister of Indian origin, is among those considered for the next prime minister post. Anita Anand (57), who has roots in Tamil Nadu, is the first Hindu woman to be elected to the Parliament of Canada.

Presently, she is the Minister of Transport and Domestic Trade. Earlier, she also served as the Defense Minister. Anita entered politics in 2019 and in a brief time, cemented her stature as one of the most powerful political names in Canada. Five people, including Anita, are being considered for the post of Prime Minister.

Anita’s crucial role in bringing Covid vaccines in abundance, while serving as the Minister of Public Services and Procurement was highly appreciated. She soon became Canada’s defense minister in 2021. Anita was born in Kentville, Nova Scotia. Anita's mother Saroj D Ram and father SV Anand are doctors. Geeta and Sonia are her siblings.

Chrystia Freeland, Marc Carney, Melanie Joly and François-Philippe Champagne are also considered for the prime ministerial post. The dwindling support across the country and the worsening internal squabbles in his party were too much for Truedeau to bear. The Canadian Prime Minister on Monday announced resigning from the PM post, also relinquishing the leadership role in the Liberal Party. Trudeau has been criticized internationally for his anti-India stance and abetting Khalistani extremists. Meanwhile, Poor immigration policy, the housing crisis and rising prices also added to his worries.
