LUCKNOW: Ceiling slab collapsed during the construction work at Kannauj railway station in Uttar Pradesh. Many labourers and railway employees were injured. The accident took place around 2.30 pm today. Many people are reported to be trapped in the debris.

Rescue operations are underway at the accident site. The injured were shifted to hospital. The teams of SDRF, GRP, RPP and local police are coordinating the rescue operation. It is indicated that around 40 people were present at the time of the accident. 23 of them have been rescued so far. The accident took place while the construction work of a two-storey building was in progress as part of the railway station renovation under the Amrit Bharat project.

The Railways has announced that they will provide Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured and Rs 5,000 to those with minor injuries. Asim Arun, BJP MLA from Kannauj constituency and Social Welfare Minister of Uttar Pradesh, said that the priority is to evacuate those trapped in the building debris.
