THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram Sub Collector Alfred OV said that the body of Gopan Swami will not be exhumed for the time being. He said that further action would be taken after hearing the part of Gopan's family. On Monday morning, District Collector Anu Kumari had ordered the opening and examination of the concrete structure constructed as the samadhi site of Gopan Swami. However, this move sparked strong protests from Gopan Swami’s family, who opposed the police action to exhume the body. Some locals too joined the family in their protests, escalating the situation.
Family members, including those who issued suicide threats, were removed from the site by police. Following the Collector's order, a large police team arrived at the site to facilitate the exhumation process. Forensic teams were also present at the site. By 11 am, the RDO (Revenue Divisional Officer) and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) arrived to conduct their investigations. Leaders from organizations such as the Hindu Aikya Vedi and VSDP also reached the site, objecting to the exhumation, claiming it would hurt religious sentiments. Locals countered, stating that the leaders were not residents of the area. This led to a dispute between both groups. This prompted the authorities to take the decision after hearing the family's part.
The family is firm in its stance that they won't allow the samadhi site to be opened. Gopan Swami’s wife, Sulochana, stated that her husband had attained samadhi and they would not permit the burial site to be opened. She alleged that the complaint was lodged by some people who wanted to take control of the temple’s administration. She also stated that none of her family members had filed a complaint regarding her husband's death. She claimed that her husband had not been bedridden and used to walk even during his final days. Her son Rajasenan issued a threat, saying that he would take his own life if attempts were made to open the burial site.
