KOCHI: Electric scooters topped the list of last year’s two-wheelers sales in the country. According to industry figures, 11,21,821 scooters were sold in the country by 20 companies. 71,626 electric scooters were sold across India in December alone. More than 70 per cent of the total electric vehicles sold in the country in 2024 are two-wheelers.
Chetak, T.V.S.Iqube, Ola, Ather, Greaves Electric Mobility, BGauss, Pure, Vida, Bounce Infiniti and Revolt sold the most vehicles in India. Apart from the leading manufacturers, new entrants are also coming into the EV market. Ather, TVS, Ola, and Bajaj companies are the popular ones in the market now.
Ola, TVS Motor, Bajaj, and Ather are currently dominating the electric vehicle market in Kerala. The on-road cost is slightly higher than fuel vehicles but the modest cost required for daily use and the ease of managing has invariably created an EV craze in the state. On a single charge at a very modest rate, the scooters will be able to cover 100 km. If the battery is charged, it can run 100 km in four units. Even if the unit is calculated at Rs.5, the cost will be just Rs.20. Meanwhile, a petrol-run bike, requires at least Rs 200 to complete 100 km.
Apart from this, there is a Rs 10,000 subsidy from the central government for purchasing EV scooters.
