MANANTHAVADY: The Forest Department has set up a cage in Pancharakolly in Mananthavady, Wayanad, to capture the man-eating tiger that killed a woman. Camera traps have also been installed to locate the tiger. As part of the measures to capture the animal, the District Collector has imposed prohibitory orders in the division, including Pancharakolly. The restrictions cover the Pancharakolly, Pilakkavu, Jessy, and Chirakkara divisions within the municipality.
Orders have been issued to shoot the man-eating tiger on sight. Drone surveillance has been initiated to locate the tiger, and all available cameras from the North and South Divisions will be urgently deployed to the area. Meanwhile, the government has handed over an emergency assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased, Radha. The amount was handed over by Minister O R Kelu to Radha's family members.
Responding to the tiger attack, Forest Minister A K Saseendran stated that the department has taken further steps to address the situation. Minister O R Kelu announced that an RRT (Rapid Response Team) would be deployed to ensure the safety of the local population. Fencing efforts will be expedited, and if there are delays in the tendering process, the work will be completed with community support. The matter of providing a government job to a family member of the victim will also be raised in the cabinet meeting, the minister added.
Radha (45), an Adivasi woman and wife of Forest Department watcher Achappan, was killed near the forest area in Pancharakolly, Mananthavady municipality today morning. The incident occurred at around 11 a.m. today. The body was found partially consumed. It was discovered by the Thunderbolt team during a routine inspection near the forest. Radha was reportedly killed by the tiger while she was on her way to a private estate to pluck coffee.
