MANANTHAVADY: The protest by the locals following the killing of a woman in a tiger attack in Pancharakolly, Wayanad has been called off. The protest was called off after the demands raised by the locals were accepted. If the tiger is caught, it will not be released into the forest. It will be shifted to a zoo or a conservation center.
The tiger will be captured with a tranquillizer or shot dead. The decision was made in a discussion held with the representatives of the protesters by CCF KS Deepa, ADM Devaki K, DFO Martin Lowell and public representatives. After the meeting, Wayanad ADM announced that a 10-member team has been deployed for observation. Dr Arun Zakaria will lead the mission.
The demands included shooting the tiger, ensuring safety at work for estate workers, giving paid leave to Priyadarshini workers, providing government vehicles to take students to school in Pancharakolly until the tiger is caught, giving a permanent job to one of Radha's children, and paying the remaining compensation amount immediately.
Meanwhile, locals say that a tiger has been spotted again in Pancharakolly. People have been advised to stay indoors as the presence of a tiger has been confirmed. The Mananthavady Municipality Chairman has also directed that the curfew rules must be followed. Inspections using drones are in progress in the tea estate. Locals, including women who protested against the tiger attack at the base camp, are being shifted to their homes under police protection. Those in the estate have also been shifted.
